Various Artists - Downtime Vol. 4 [mp3]

This is something I made for a couple of friends IRL… it’s not a monthly mixtape (remember those?), it’s not a DJ set. It’s an hour and a half playlist of songs that are a great back drop for when you’re chilling out. I recorded the playlist as a single mp3 and faded the songs in and out of each other. You know, like a radio show, minus the talk and commercials.

It features bands like The Shins, Joni Mitchell, Bahamas, Bon Iver, Woodpigeon, The Tallest Man on Earth, Laura Marling, Birdy, Cur De Pirate, Gil Scott-Heron, Allo Darlin’, Craig Finn, Ryan Adams, Best Coast, and Grimes. Music mostly written on guitars (as opposed to synths or samplers). Pairs well with a comfy chair and three cocktails.

Riddle me this… since seeing the whole Don Draper listens to The Beatles thing last Sunday, I’ve had this Beck song stuck in my head. Which is ~~stupid~~ weird because despite the retro feel, it obviously sounds nothing like Tomorrow Never Knows (and apes a musical style that wouldn’t even have existed at the same time… would it?).

So either my brain is a complex warehouse of music memories that magically and non-linearly links together strangely related tracks… or I’m just getting ultra lazy subconsciously and lumping music into two broad categories of OLD! and NEW!
