Praise for all of those “Top X Albums/Songs of the Decade” lists popping up on the Internet

The top album/songs of lists that usually come out at this time of year which only recap the last 12 months are often boring.  A big reasons for this is because they tend to focus on the same small set of artists and provide the same associated commentary.

The top album/songs of the decade lists are skewing completely different.  I’m really enjoying the diversity in these lists.  Best of all, because a decade is such a huge period of time the author’s tastes and maturity change… it’s impossible for any one to load up a list of albums simply for the sake of them being fashionable (assuming they’re composing a list with genuine intent).  Diversity and true and colours show.  That’s a really good thing.

To clarify: I’m not talking about professional website lists, I’m talking about random blogger lists.

I’ve promised myself I’m NOT pulling together my own top albums of the decade list.  This is for two reasons (1) I’ll debate myself endlessly and never actually complete it, and (2) I put out annual audio almanacs (see: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 will be ready this time next month).

With that said, if I were to put out a list I’m sure it would include Ryan Adams, Wilco, Broken Social Scene, the first Metric album, Jason Collette, Jamie Lidell, The Futureheads, The New Pornographers, Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem, Apples in Stereo, Tegan & Sara, Danko Jones, Weezer, White Stripes, Fatboy Slim, Hawksley Workman, The Stills, LeftNutt, etc. Basically, a total dogs breakfast of sound.  Awesome.
