I too am using my blog as a public medium for reflection on the past year and resolutions for this next year.  Yay?
I did that Immacula thing last January and it made ALL of the difference in the world for me in 2011.  I got fit, I got smart, I created things, I pushed myself.  I’m about to do a January 2012 Immacula thing again with goals around eating right, getting and prioritizing exercise, reading, mediating (shut up, it’s great), and creating/putting some stuff out there.
I’m in the process of mapping out my specific goals and plans for January (I know, so cool, right?) and I found this old note pad (above) I used in 2011.  At some point last year, I wrote out some rough-draft imperatives for myself.  They probably sound idiotic to an outsider, but they worked awesome for me:
Just show up - this was more in the social realm for me.  Stop coming up with excuses for not trying things, seeing people, etc and just go for it/get your hang on.  Good stuff usually ensues.
Be [name redacted] - there’s a person I know who’s psyched about everything… even the shitty stuff.  Which makes people around her get psyched about everything too. Which means good stuff usually ensues.
Problem solve like a Chinese kid - no, I’m not being a racist.  Rather I’m referencing Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers, which argues that we (westerners) tend to give up on problem solving way too easily.  I forced myself to sit still and think through day job problems without giving up to a point of pain in 2011.  I figured out the challenges thrown my way, and good stuff usually ensued.
You will feel better after you work out - 100% of the time if I’m feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, confused, angry, etc and I take 20 - 60 minutes to sweat and physically push myself, my brain is completely calm after.  Every time, it never fails.  It’s better than drugs, guys.  Also, your pants will fit better, as a bonus.
Now I’m gonna write some more imperatives, but I’ll spare you (until I’ve road tested them for a few months).
