Also, tonight I watched about an hour of MuchMore Retro while knocking back a bottle of wine with Tk. She hated it, but I loved it!
During the hour I deconstructed every 80’s Canadian rock video I saw. Every video showcased the following elements:
- An “abandoned” warehouse used a space for a live performance. I assume these videos were all filmed in Yaletown before it got gentrified.
- Men wearing Mom-Jeans.
- Black and white cinematography.
- A domestic dispute between a couple as a plot device or back story.
- A saxophone. Whether or not it was played was irrelevant.
- A lead singer who spins around in circles in slow motion during all instrumental breaks.
- Permed mullets.
- Guitars and keyboards not plugged into anything. Also, no microphones.
- Choruses sung by the band in a huddle formation, as if they were singing around a single microphone (despite no microphone being present).
- Trench coats.
What kills me is that when I saw these videos as a (very young) kid, I thought they were cool. Or at least I bought the idea that what they were showing me was cool.
Yikes.
I look forward to the circle of life completing itself one day (in 2030?) when the Tegan & Sara video I was in is played on the futuristic version of MuchMore Retro and my children painstakingly point out how lame it actually was.

I recently watched a bunch of Corey Hart, Glass Tiger and Gowan videos (please don’t ask me why, there’s no rational answer) and you are so on the money.
